Time of Debriefing

Whenever someone makes a monumental change in one's life, it is always good to have some time of debriefing to reflect, adjust and prepare. Leaving a life of full-time traveling and moving back into a stick and brick house with a "regular job" is going to be a big transition in our life.

We have spent the past three weeks we have spent living in our temporary home, a house that belongs to Matt and Rachel Cassady, some of our family. We have stored all our furniture in this house in the heartland of America and stopped in a time or two to see how our "things" are doing. This little stay has been a good time to sort through all the mixed emotions of coming off the road.

During this time we have visited with lots of family in the area, starting with Patsy's brother Steve and his wife Jeanne. They bequeathed us with a house warming gift, a life sized cardboard cutout of Han Solo. We do have a strange family.

My entire family got together for some fun but also for a big roofing and painting project on my sister Rachel and her husband Matt's home. The house we have been staying in was in definite need of these repairs, so my dad and stepmom, both my sisters and their families and my own clan got together to help out the Cassadys who have been serving God the past nine years as Matt is a chaplain in the Army. We were so proud at how much we all got done over a weekend, even the kids worked hard at painting and clean-up! To celebrate we spent the afternoon at America's Incredible Pizza Company eating, playing laser tag and riding bumper cars.

Later we took a quick trip to Rockford to visit more family, to do a final interview with Paul Youngblood on WNTA about our big adventure to speak to a group from my mother and father-in-law's church about the things God taught us while traveling across the country. Add in some packing and taking care of normal household duties and we have had a pretty busy time of debriefing.

Canada Kidology to Go

The Canadian version of Kidology to Go was a ton of fun. As I was presenting the material I realized how "American" some of the presentations. Still, those who came to the seminars were quite gracious with my southern accent and American terminology and we had a great time sharing together.

My name on a sign!

Several churches from the area took advantage of this Kidology to Go. Bethany Evangelical Missionary Church was a great host and Children's Pastor Tim Bryson really made this day a quality time of training, equipping and laughter! The church also asked me to speak on Sunday morning and I really enjoyed speaking with the church on the importance of reaching the next generation. Very cool to be with our friends north of the border!

The boys got to play hockey in the church's gym! Well, floor hockey anyway.

Champ

While we spoke at a church near Plattsburgh, New York, we crossed over Lake Champlain on a ferry from Vermont. this was pretty exciting for everyone because, well it is out of the ordinary. We have been on a ferry before, most recently to Balboa Island last March. But this is the first time we have taken Howard on an ferry. This was both cool and expensive.

While crossing the lake we kept a sharp eye out for America's Loch Ness monster - Champ. Champ has been rumored to live in these deep waters for many ages and there have been some sightings even photographs. We thought we might have spotted him ourselves - see if you can see him in the photograph below.

The church had a great little spot for us to camp at while we were there. This little camping spot was perfect because we full hook-ups, a quiet location, playground equipment and it was right next to Lake Champlain. Thus we had more opportunity to spot our mystical creature. We definitely saw a few loons and kingfishers at this beautiful location!

The church we spoke at is in nearby West Chazy and will soon become our home. We were there to candidate and were eventually offered the position of senior pastor here. So our full-time traveling days will be coming to an end when we start at West Chazy Community Church on July 1st. We plan on keeping Howard and still traveling from time to time. Our love of exploring will always burn bright.

Our GPS while on the ferry - in the middle of a lake!

Be sure to keep tuned in to our blog as we will continue sharing updates from the road these next couple of months and wrap it up once we stop. We also plan on writing a book detailing our journeys!

Wesley Chapel K2Go

Our family had a great time training and meeting new friends at Siler Presbyterian Church, located in Wesley Chapel, North Carolina. Children's Ministry Coordinator Elisabeth Smith was so awesome in making us feel welcome. They fed us well and really displayed the gift of hospitality.

[/caption] The original church building is a wonderful classic structure, a gorgeous place to worship. We enjoyed the Sunday morning sermon and a fried chicken lunch after church. Our young boys loved their time in children's church and keep asking us to go back to "that cool church!"

We had around thirty children's ministry workers attend this conference and we will always have warm memories of the people who came and interacted with us here!

Children's Pastor Conference

Sorry, but this post has been deleted because it is a part of our new book called Napkin Dreams!

Our family of five boys looked so great, we were handed five different CDs with Christian kid's music!!

We did get to meet up with Karl at the Discipleland booth. He was very gracious and understanding, encouraging my wife to go and be with her father. When we were done walking to gauntlet our boys had a big bag full of freebies and they were all very glad to be there. They barely even realized they were on Disney property!

Christmas Camp

One of our volunteer opportunities we had while staying at Hephzibah Children's Home was to give the daily devotions this past week at Christmas Camp. We had a lot of fun speaking at the camp, doing illusions, puppets, science tricks and showing some Toy Box Tales. Blake and Tanner helped us some with puppets and Brendan, David and Chase all got to attend Christmas Camp here!

Chase learning to bat at Christmas Camp!

They really enjoyed getting to play with other kids, swim, and have a bunch of snacks. God continues to not only provide places for our family to minister but He is giving our kids unique opportunities to experience and a place to volunteer as well. He has proven to us here at Hephzibah that you can't out give God!

42 in Macon

I celebrated my second birthday on the road this Monday. Actually it was my forty-second birthday overall, but the second one since we have been full-timing!

Birthdays in a motorhome are not a whole lot different than in a stick and brick house, just closer proximity to each other! Usually the gifts are pretty practical and modest, but that has always been the way we celebrate most of our birthdays! For my 42nd birthday I opened my gifts and cards after breakfast. My gifts were clothes to replace some of mine that had bitten the dust. I admit that I am pretty hard on clothes, but I get a lot of wear out of them.

After present time I volunteered at Hephzibah in Macon, Georgia, where we are staying. I hung some blinds in a few of the office windows and then later helped a new family who is moving here as house parents unload their U-Haul into one of the apartments here. Like most of my birthdays, I worked. Only this time I had my son Blake there to help me for a big part of it.

I was pretty wiped after this, but a quick shower woke me up and we all drove into Atlanta for a fun dinner at Dave and Busters. This restaurant was my request, because it is sort of like Chuck E Cheese for adults! We ate some good food and played several games and won a bunch of tickets! I also got a yummy brownie in place of a birthday cake!

All this goes to prove that even though we live in a small place and travel from location to location, we are still normal people!! Well almost normal. :)

Hephzibah Children's Home

No longer will they call you Deserted,

   or name your land Desolate.
But you will be called Hephzibah,
   and your land Beulah;
for the LORD will take delight in you,
and your land will be married.

Isaiah 62:4

One of the goals of our trip was to find some ministry outside of being a pastor's family. Jesus certainly did not limit the ministry he did to inside a church (Ok a synagogue)! We really prayed that God would open some doors for us in this regard.

The door opened for us to stay at Hephzibah Children's Home for most of the month of December. There is a small RV Park with full hook-ups here at Hephzibah for people who come here and volunteer at the home.

Hephzibah has been serving the needs of children since 1900. For more than a century, the Home has been a stable influence on hundreds of children and young people in need of out-of-home care. Hephzibah is located on a beautiful piece of property, around 200 acres in Macon, Georgia. The mission of Hephzibah Children's Home is to provide a Christ-centered, safe and wholesome environment for children and young people in crisis.

So far we have been at the Home for almost a week and we have picked up trash, helped a new mother move to a new room, cleaned an apartment, set up a room for a banquet, changed light bulbs on very tall chandeliers. and other assorted tasks. We also met some new friends who have been very kind in making us feel welcomed here at Hephzibah! We have had some free time to play football and let the kids ride their bikes and all the kids love getting to ride around on the golf carts!!

This works our really well for us in Howard as well, so we can set up a tree and all our Christmas lights and we do not have to move the rig and take it all down each time we move to another place.

Kevin Shutterbug at Joshua Tree NP

We recently visited Joshua Tree National Park near Palm Springs, California where Kevin Shutterbug spoke with Patsy about their visit to this park and the upcoming Children’s Pastor conference in San Diego where the Kidology to Go RV will be making a special guest appearance!!

Special thanks to One Way Street for letting The Martin family adopt Kevin during their travels!

We had a great time at Joshua Tree NP climbing rocks and finding lizards. We hiked to Barker Dam and we saw tons of lizards along with antelope squirrels and a black-tailed jack rabbit. The weather here was so nice, on the 80s this week. We just arrived in San Diego today for CPC and it is 20 degrees cooler here. Brrrr

Kevin Shutterbug and friends Christmas song

When we were at Rock Church we did a puppet song. Blake, Tanner and Patsy all did a puppet for the kids. One Way Street Ministries is a sponsor of our traveling ministry, and we used several of their ministry tools in this performance. Kevin Shutterbug, in the middle, is one of their puppets. The other two puppets, Dude and Bob, Patsy made using One Way Street puppet patterns. The song is off their RPM Christmas CD. Be sure to check out this great ministry's website and their many resources!
