Champ
While we spoke at a church near Plattsburgh, New York, we crossed over Lake Champlain on a ferry from Vermont. this was pretty exciting for everyone because, well it is out of the ordinary. We have been on a ferry before, most recently to Balboa Island last March. But this is the first time we have taken Howard on an ferry. This was both cool and expensive.
While crossing the lake we kept a sharp eye out for America's Loch Ness monster - Champ. Champ has been rumored to live in these deep waters for many ages and there have been some sightings even photographs. We thought we might have spotted him ourselves - see if you can see him in the photograph below.
The church had a great little spot for us to camp at while we were there. This little camping spot was perfect because we full hook-ups, a quiet location, playground equipment and it was right next to Lake Champlain. Thus we had more opportunity to spot our mystical creature. We definitely saw a few loons and kingfishers at this beautiful location!
The church we spoke at is in nearby West Chazy and will soon become our home. We were there to candidate and were eventually offered the position of senior pastor here. So our full-time traveling days will be coming to an end when we start at West Chazy Community Church on July 1st. We plan on keeping Howard and still traveling from time to time. Our love of exploring will always burn bright.
Be sure to keep tuned in to our blog as we will continue sharing updates from the road these next couple of months and wrap it up once we stop. We also plan on writing a book detailing our journeys!

Campground Review - Webster Sturbridge Family Campground
We stayed a couple of nights at the Webster Sturbridge Family Campground in Webster, Massachusetts while we got a new tire for our tow dolly. While traveling through Rhode Island we had another flat tire on the tow dolly, making the total number of changed tires on the tow dolly six! The fenders were ripping them up, so we have totally removed said fenders, and were hoping were good to go now!
Staff - 9 - Owners were very nice and helped us locate a tire store.
Natural surroundings - 8 - Lots of trees and close to the lake with the longest name in the world - Lake Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg!!
Roominess - 9 - Lots were very long where we stayed, and plenty wide enough.
Facility usefulness - 7 - Free wifi, cable, dog run, laundromat, propane, small store.
Bathrooms - 7 - Bathrooms are recently remodeled.
Staff - 9 - Owners were very nice and helped us locate a tire store.
Natural surroundings - 8 - Lots of trees and close to the lake with the longest name in the world - Lake Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg!!
Roominess - 9 - Lots were very long where we stayed, and plenty wide enough.
Facility Fun - 6 - Older playground equipment, pool open in season, BB court and horseshoes.
Facility usefulness - 7 - Free wifi, cable, dog run, laundromat, propane, small store.
Bathrooms - 7 - Bathrooms are recently remodeled.
Cleanliness - 5 - Lots of long term rigs here, some in pretty rough shape. Also our kids found plenty of bits of junk sitting around. It needs a good litter pick-up.
Nearby attractions - 7 - Close to Worcester and Springfield and within reach of Boston.
Value - 6 - Paid $40 a night for a pull-through gravel site with full-hook-ups.

Overall - 6 - Friendly people, but the campground needs a better cleaning crew.

Charleston, SC and Oak Plantation Campground Review
We stayed an entire week in Charleston and we were able to get downtown for a walk through the open market and a lunch at Bubba Gumps! This is the only repeat we had from our trip here a few years ago. The open market is so cool with lots of interesting things for sale. We did not purchase anything since we spent plenty on lunch at Bubba Gumps. We had fun answering Sponge Bob and Forrest Gump trivia here. Oh yeah the food was great too!!
We stayed at the Oak Plantation Campground during our stay in Charleston.
Staff - 8 - Basic friendliness.
Natural surroundings - 8 - Surrounded by trees and smaller lakes, but close to town.
Roominess - 9 - very big sites!!
Facility Fun - 7 - Pool (open in season), small playground, horseshoes, free fishing, plenty of room to ride bikes.
Facility usefulness - 9 - Free decent speed wifi, laundry, propane, fenced -in dog run, exchange library, camp store.
Bathrooms - 8 - Average
Nearby attractions - 9 - Close to beaches, Charleston and Mount Pleasant sites.
Value - 7 - Paid $40 a night for a pull-through cement pad site with full-hook-ups.
Overall - 8 - Not bad for Charleston area in terms of price. Clean and big park with an average atmosphere.

We have hit our 35th state - South Carolina!! We came in yesterday and are staying in the Charleston area for awhile. This means we have been to 70 percent of the states so far this trip!!

Airboat ride at Gator Park
I do not know why, but when we were dreaming and planning our trip, we just felt that one of things we we really wanted to do was to take an airboat ride in the Florida Everglades! This is one must-do that did not disappoint!
We chose a place called Gator Park because they have a small campground attached to their operations, but there many different airboat ride outfits to choose from in the area. Winter is their busy season, so all of them are open for business.
We got on the first boat of the morning and our captain was quite a character. He had a gravelly voice due to sixteen years of talking over an airboat. A few of the wild birds in the area come and sit on his shoulder as he speaks. At one time he had two boat grackles and a purple gallinule perched on his personhood.
He also knows all the local alligators who live in the area and calls them by name. Believe it or not they come out to see him. "Lily, come out and see me," he hollers in his rough voice and out swims Lily in a couple of minutes with some of her young ones in tow. He must be one of those Swamp People on the television!
As our guide he was very knowledgeable about the Everglades and the wildlife and the ecosystem that makes up the entire area. He also knows his machine and how to open up that airboat to full throttle and do a little swerving and swinging in the boat. What a blast we had.
Then to top it off we got to see a wildlife show. Patsy got an up close and personal view of an emperor scorpion and the rest of us got to hold a four year old gator named Larry!! This is one of the most memorable things we have done on our trip and we highly recommend it!

Gator Park also has an RV Park which we stayed at for two days.

Nearby attractions - 9 - Close to Everglades National Park, Miami and all other regional attractions.
Natural surroundings - 8 - Lots of varied palm trees and a everglades surround park.
Value - 7 - We paid $34 a night for a back-in site with full hook-ups except sewer.
Bathrooms - 3 - only bathrooms were inside store which closes at 5 pm. No showers.
Roominess - 6 - Kinda tight space
Facility fun - 6 - So after the ride and show there is not a whole lot to do. You can walk the grounds and see more gators swimming in the nearby lake (fenced in) and some other wildlife and farm animals.
Cleanliness - 7 - Most of the sites are being occupied by Gator Park employees. Some have nice rigs and others have run down spots.
Facility usefulness - 5 - Store with a few food items. Restaurant at park as well.
Overall - 6 - Cheap for area, but not a place to stay more than a night or two.

The Vulcan
If you ever visit Birmingham, Alabama, be sure to visit the big Greek statue of the so-called god of the forge, Vulcan that overlooks the the largest city in Bama! We were expecting perhaps Spock, but instead we found a bearded fellow with a naked behind. As Blake commented, the Greeks were quite fond of naked bottoms.
You have to pay a fee to get to the top of the statue and to go into the Vulcan Museum, but we passed on the fee and we could see the city quite nicely at Vulcan's feet. On a clear day you can see quite far. After talking about it, as a fasily we like the Star of Roanoke far better than the Vulcan of Birmingham!
